Seismic Risk with Perspective
Common Nonstructural Seismic Damage

Nonstructural elements can be broadly categorized as all of the items in or on a building that are not the structural framing.  Nonstructural elements consist of cladding, windows, interior partitions and ceiling systems, lights, office furniture, and building service equipment to name a few.  The damage to these elements is dependent upon the motion (primarily deflection) of the building to the earthquake and the anchorage or bracing of the element.
